Topic 1: Valuing Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services – An Introduction
In this topic, we provide an overview of the consequences and causes of biodiversity loss, a description of the range of ecosystem services that nature provides, and an introduction to the concept of economic valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Developing Biodiversity Indicators
The course focuses primarily on the development of biodiversity indicators at the national and sub-national scales, but the steps are relevant to those developing site-level indicators too. The first five lessons focus on national biodiversity indicator development in general, while the sixth lesson considers the role of indicators in updating countries’ National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs).
Duration: Six short lessons, each of which takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete.This course is designed to help coral reef managers incorporate climate-smart design into their management activities by considering the effects of climate change on ecosystem stressors and implications for effective management. It describes the process of incorporating climate change adaptation into management plans using existing planned actions as a starting point, and also guides development of additional climate-smart strategies as needed.

The lessons will improve your knowledge of the links between managing protected areas for biodiversity conservation and for ecosystem services. The module is designed for protected area managers, conservation practitioners, and conservation policymakers.

Measures Demystified
The Nature Conservancy is offering this self-paced, online training curriculum on measures, which represents the assessment or third phase of the plan-do-check-adapt conservation management cycle.
This self-paced courses provides conservation practitioners with the opportunity to explore, at their own pace, the process of considering the audience and conservation context for monitoring programs, as well as reviewing the fundamentals of articulating program logic and experimental design for cost effective data collection, which we collectively refer to as “measures.”

Facilitating Species Conservation Planning Workshops February 2020
This course is designed for conservation practitioners who want to design and facilitate a species conservation planning workshop. The processes, tools, and skills covered during this course are also relevant to those wanting to improve their management of group problem-solving, decision-making, and planning.

This module consists of 4 individual courses, providing you with the knowledge, tools and skills to be able to apply the ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM). The module is based on the Essential Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management training course developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and IMA International. The online course and the translations of materials into Spanish were developed by TNC.
Topics covered include learning about the principles of EAFM and understanding why it is a preferred approach to sustainably managed fisheries. Practical advice on how to plan, implement and monitor the ecological, human and governance components of EAFM is provided along with a look at challenges that regional fisheries face in moving towards EAFM. Most importantly, this module provides an introduction to the people skills needed to incorporate an ecosystem approach into your existing fisheries management.
Available in English and Spanish Duration: 2.5 hoursThis unit introduces students to the mangrove – a rare and threatened ecosystem. It provides a brief overview of how mangroves evolved, their geographical distribution, importance to humans and coastal ecology, and global status and threats. Much of the information summarized here is expanded upon in greater detail in subsequent units. Thus, the material covered in this unit will enable students to grasp more complex topics related to the biology, ecology, assessment and management of mangroves.
Duration: approximately 2 hours to complete.The complete course contains 10 units.
